  T-SET Director, Raj Rajkumar, will testify at The House Transportation and Infrastructure (T&I) Subcommittee on Highways and Transit hearing on How Autonomous Vehicles Will Shape the Future of Surface Transportation on Tuesday, November 19 at 10:00 a.m.. The hearing will address the potential impacts of autonomous vehicle technology on the transportation network, as well as federal policies that may be necessary for their adoption. The panel will hear testimony from the U.S. DOT, a state DOT official, representatives from the automobile industry, and ITS America Leadership Circle member Carnegie Mellon University which hosted T&I Chairman Bill Shuster (R-PA) for a recent demonstration drive of autonomous vehicle technology. More information about the hearing will be available on the T&I Committee’s brand new website as it becomes available.

T-SET and the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership hosted Don Shoup to speak to transportation leaders in the region. Donald Shoup is Distinguished Professor of Urban Planning at UCLA, where he has served as Chair of the Department of Urban Planning and Director of the Institute of Transportation Studies. His book, The High Cost of Free Parking, explains how better parking policies can improve cities, the economy, and the environment.

Approximately 20 township managers came to CMU to learn about the work UTC is doing. Chris Hendrickson presented on our work with PennDOT and the Autonomous and Connected Vehicle Vision 2040. Christoph Mertz showed LTAP around the NavLAB and discussed his upcoming project with PennDOT: Road Surface Detection.

PennDOT took T-SET out in the bucket and under a bridge to demonstrate their existing bridge inspection protocol. CMU researchers Christoph Mertz and Haeyoung Noh are working on bridge structural monitoring technology that includes sensors and signal processing. More about the project here

  August 28th, 2013 - Faculty Hire Reflects Collaborative Research Focus in Smart Infrastructure
This fall, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) welcomes Zhen (Sean) Qian as a new faculty member who holds a joint appointment as assistant research professor with the Heinz College and ICES. Qian's research lies in the integration and optimization of civil infrastructure systems. His appointment reflects the multidisciplinary collaborative work being done on smart infrastructure systems by CMU groups including the Pennsylvania Smart Infrastructure Incubator (PSII), the Technologies for Safe and Efficient Transportation (T-SET UTC), and Traffic21.

The primary focus of Qian's research is to manage aging and overcrowded transportation infrastructure systems, and to build sustainable and resilient infrastructure networks. He is particularly interested in large-scale dynamic network modeling for multi-modal transportation systems, the development of intelligent transportation systems (ITS), and transportation economics.

Qian was most recently a postdoctoral scholar with Professor Ram Rajagopal in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University and received his Ph.D. degree in civil engineering at the University of California, Davis.

  July 2013 - Dr. Rajkumar Highlights Intelligent Transportation in Keynote Addresses at Summer Conferences.
Dr. Raj Rajkumar, T-SET director, spent his summer vacation giving keynote addresses on the topic of intelligent transportation at several international conferences in Asia.

In June, he spoke on: "Intelligent Transportation Systems of the Future" at the Third International Workshop on M2M Technology in Taipei, Taiwan on June 22, "Intelligent Transportation Systems: A Peek into the Future" at the Tenth ACM International Workshop on VehiculAr Inter-NETworking, Systems, and Applications (VANET) in Taipei, Taiwan on June 25; and "Cyber-Physical System Applications and Challenges in Transportation" at the Second International Conference on Transportation Information and Safety (ICTIS) in Wuhan, China on June 29.

In July, Dr. Rajkumar travelled to Kyoto, Japan to present on "Intelligent Transportation with Cyber-Physical Technologies" at the 37th Annual International Computer Software & Applications Conference (COMPSAC) in Kyoto, Japan on July 23.
  July 17th, 2013 - PGH International Airport to be the Most Intelligent In the World.
The Pittsburgh International Airport invited the UTC faculty out for a site visit to explore how to make it the most intelligent airport in the world. Fourteen researchers met with Operations, Security, Maintenance, and Parking managers to learn about the real-world problems they face day to day. The site visit concluded with a round table discussion and plenty of ideas for intelligent transportation solutions. Stay tuned as the UTC develops these projects!
  July 2013 - Transforming Transportation Through Technology
The acts of driving and commuting often feel like something better suited to a road warrior than a mere mortal. It becomes particularly stressful when you consider the hazards caused by structural deterioration of roads and bridges, the number of accidents that occur yearly due to road conditions and driver carelessness, and the aggravation created because of commuting congestion and traffic delays.

It is such hazards that traffic researchers at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) have been addressing as they work to develop safer and more efficient driving and transportation systems. With funding received last year from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), research at CMU has expanded from using Pittsburgh as a test bed for deployments to include state-wide collaborations.full story...
  June, 2013 - Raj Rajkumar is Keynote Speaker at MASITE/ITSPA Seminar Series
In an effort to expose industry and transportation professionals to innovative research, Ragunathan “Raj” Rajkumar – director of the Technologies for Safe and Efficient Transportation University Transportation Center (T-SET UTC) – presented this past April at the joint meeting of the Mid-Atlantic Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (MASITE) and the Intelligent Transportation Society of Pennsylvania (ITSPA).

The topic of his keynote speech was “Autonomous Vehicles, Not If, But When!” Following his speech, the attendees adjourned to the parking lot where they were able to tour an actual autonomous vehicle, inside and out.

Dr. Rajkumar is the George Westinghouse Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. As well as being the director of the T-SET UTC, he is co-director of the General Motors-Carnegie Mellon Vehicular Information Technology Collaborative Research Lab and of the General Motors-Carnegie Mellon Autonomous Driving Collaborative Research Lab. He is also director of the Real-Time and Multimedia Systems Lab.
  May 15th and 16th, 2013 - T-SET Holds First Technology Transfer Symposium with Consortium Meeting in May to Encourage Continued Research Collaboration
On May 15 and 16, 2013, the Technologies for Safe and Efficient Transportation (T-SET) held the third meeting of its 40 member Consortium at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) to encourage collaborative research on transportation technology issues. Over 50 people attended the two-day event, which included an afternoon symposium to discuss issues of commercializing emergent research and a day-long symposium during which the T-SET consortium partners had the opportunity to brainstorm and share ideas.

In conjunction with the Consortium meeting, T-SET partnered with the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) to host a Technology Transfer Workshop on May 15 called "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?". The workshop highlighted five T-SET faculty research projects and also included presentations from AlphaLAB, CIE, and InnovationWorks. The goal of this event was to encourage networking among researchers, entrepreneurs and investors. Over 50 people were in attendance for this mutually educational event, including investors, foundation representatives, and representatives from the campus community as well as Consortium members.

The issues discussed during these events included specific ways to deploy research, create new test beds, and commercialize research products. Also included was a plenary session for consortium members to discuss ideas for technology transfer, education, workforce development, diversity, and research.

Speakers and discussants included researchers from CMU and the University of Pennsylvania who represented research projects on varied topics including adaptive traffic signals, navigation aids for blind travelers, and transit rider messaging. Attending consortium members included representatives from the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, ALCO Parking, the City of Pittsburgh, East Liberty Development Inc., the Port Authority of Allegheny County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the Port of Pittsburgh Commission, and Innovation Works, a regional investor in seed-stage companies.
  April 29th, 2013 - T-SET UTC Hires New Project Manager
Transportation technology at Carnegie Mellon University is on the move. Receiving renewed funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation and expanding to state-wide research and deployments in smart technology, the Traffic21 Initiative and Technologies for Safe and Efficient Transportation University Transportation Center (T-SET UTC) are taking on a greater role in shaping transportation infrastructure. To meet the new demands of this role, the T-SET UTC team has recently expanded with the hiring of Courtney Ehrlichman as project manager.

In this role, Ms. Ehrlichman will be managing dozens of T-SET UTC and Traffic21 intelligent transportation research projects and coordinating with its consortium of over 30 community partners to ensure the transfer of this technology from the university to the real world.

Ms. Ehrlichman has managed projects at a number of non-profit organizations including the Friendship Development Associates, cityLAB, Pittsburgh Filmmakers/Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, and the Flight School Fellowship which she spun out of Carnegie Mellon University in 2010. Overall, Ms. Ehrlichman has raised over $2.5 million in federal, state, and private funds to implement the projects she has designed and managed. She holds a masters of public management from the Heinz College at Carnegie Mellon University and a bachelors degree in urban planning and architectural studies from the University of Pittsburgh.

"We are pleased to have Courtney join our T-SET team," says UTC Director, Professor Raj Rajkumar. "As more UTC research projects move to deployment, her understanding of research and experience with community organizations will be particularly critical in managing our technology transfer efforts."

Ms. Ehrlichman is equally pleased in joining the team: "There's been a lot of buzz about the intelligent transportation work being done here - I knew this was a team I wanted to join. The dedication to get this technology out into the real world to improve our transportation systems right here, in Pittsburgh, and beyond, is unprecedented. I'm thrilled to be the liaison between these innovative researchers and the organizations out in the community to make it happen."
  February 2013 - National Engineers Week
Faculty, staff, and students volunteered their time during National Engineers Week at the Carnegie Science Center. Students were challenged to design their own Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Pittsburgh, using a computer simulation program developed by Get There Pittsburgh. By customizing aspects of their BRT, including station design options and amenities, street options, bus types, and signage, students were able to see how these decisions would change their bus systems’ performance metrics in terms of travel time for riders, levels of ridership, economic development in the area, and the cost to develop it.
