Abstract:Snow accumulation and deterioration of infrastructure like potholes, damaged traffic signs or loss of retro-reflectivity of line paintings are examples of road safety concerns that need to be communicated to operation or maintenance within a short (minutes) to medium (weeks) time frame. The listed concerns have in common that they can be observed from within a vehicle. We propose to use smartphones mounted on the windshield of vehicles to capture images of the road, analyze them and transfer the data to a central location. The host vehicles could be ones that already traverse the area of interest for other purposes, e.g. snowplows, buses or garbage trucks. The proposed system would be much more timely, comprehensive, and cost effective than current methods.
