Technology is changing our transportation system very quickly. Every day, automakers are adding more and more automated and connected features to consumer vehicles. How does this effect policy makers’ decisions? How do Departments of Transportation plan for this? What infrastructure is needed? In 2014, Al Biehler and Chris Hendrickson developed "A Vision for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles 2040" for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and grappled with these questions. Come learn about what it will take to develop our future transportation system.
Al Biehler is a distinguished Service Professor of Transportation Systems and Policy at H. John Heinz III College. Prior to coming to the Heinz College in 2012, Al has worked as a consultant for DMJM- Harris and has served as Secretary of PA Department of Transportation. During his time as secretary, Al launched a program, Smart Transportation, that ensured highway projects became an asset for the surrounding communities.
Chris Hendrickson is a Hamerschlag Professor of Engineering and a Director of the Traffic21 Institute. His research area is engineering planning and management with his current projects include life cycle assessment methods, assessment of alternative construction materials, and congestion management strategies.
